Freeze Protection Guidelines

If you expect a freeze, but are not ready to shut off the irrigation system for the season:

1. Turn off the water to the sprinkler system ONLY

2. Open the drain near the water shut off.

3. Open the test cocks (2) at a 45 degree angle.

4. Turn the handles on the backflow device to a 45 degree angle.

5. Turn 1 or 2 zones on to create and anti-syphon process that will drain the water from the backflow device.

6. Covering the backflow device with a blanket and a plastic garbage bag will often protect the device from freezing.

Winterize Your Sprinkler System

To shut off the system for the season:

1. Turn off the water to the system

2. Drain the backflow device

3. Blow out the system 1 zone at a time

4. Turn the ball valves to a 45 degree angle

Activate Your Sprinkler System in the Spring

3. Water will come out of the backflow device until full and the valves have seated.
